The Hospital Benefits Women’s Basketball Club was formed by the Hospital Benefits (HBF) Social Club for the young ladies who worked for the firm in 1954.
The Club had one team in the 3rd Grade and games were played at Langley Park. Training was held at the old East Perth Primary School – which is now where the Education Department is situated. In 1955 the team moved up to ………… In 1956 the club had two teams in Divisions D3 and F3.
Back in those days (for some – the good old days) the proceedings were very formal and proud, with an opening ceremony to kick off the beginning of the season. For the opening of the season, all girls in full uniform would assemble together and march through the streets of Perth with photos the next day in the newspaper. |
 |
The season of 1961 saw all of the games move to Matthew’s Netball Centre. The coach of both teams was Kevin Taylor and the captain, Fay Walker. Each Saturday would see young ladies getting off the bus that ran from Perth and back to play their games.
On the first day of the season an opening ceremony was held and all teams played, and were assessed and graded.
From time to time, as the Club grew, the opportunity to play away from home arose, and the Club travelled by bus to play in towns and cities across the State, including Bunbury, Cunderdin and Harvey. Those players still talk about those trips and their many, many fond memories. |
 |
To keep the Club growing, Juniors were introduced. This gave the opportunity for many of the players’ younger sisters and daughters to join in and love the game as well.

In 1982 as the Association introduced under 19 Division. This year HBF won the Grand Final. Members of the Club that season included Jodie Power, Tanya Mullaley with Shelly Epps as their coach. |
 |
In 1993, HBF moved into “A” grade (Division 1) where many of the Bullets players joined the Club. This lifted the profile of the Club and as a result enjoyed an influx of players.
An affiliation was formed with St Mary’s, Karrinyup. Vanny Samuel, one of the senior players and her fiancé would drive the school bus to drive the boarders to and from training. This association is still with the Club today.
During the 1990s, HBF decided that they would no longer sponsor the club and the name changed to BENEFITS. This enabled the Club to keep the same uniform and colours. |
 |
2008 sees the Club take on a totally different uniform and name.
We have moved into the “dress” style uniform and taken on the name Storm. Our 17 & Under teams will keep the same skirt and shirt style uniform with new design for the playing shirt.
We are looking forward to a successful season this year!!
